Carlton couldn't believe it when Brigid mentioned the name Lincoln. It was a blast from the past and a chapter in his life he thought was closed. Why and how he ended up here was beyond Carlton's comprehension. Was he tracking him? But how would Lincoln know that Carlton had changed his name? Carlton had no idea of where he was going as he made his horse gallop across the plains. He just had to get away and think about what to do. Would he up and leave? The children and Brigid would be safer without him. He knew as soon as Travis Lincoln knew of his existence in Casper, he was going to exact his revenge.

He stopped the horse. Where was he going? He had to make a stand, but there was too much at stake. In Casper, he was Carlton Briggs, not Carlton Sanders, a member of the Bonny gang. The truth about him would not sit well with the fine people of Casper who were trying to fill the town with folks they deemed worthy. An ex-bandit was required. Casper knew people would forget about his great deeds, what he had done for the Murphy children, the Carlton they knew would be dead as they just saw the bandit Sanders.

As he sat on his horse and looked out ahead, he recalled his father's death. How the "decent" townsfolk had believed the lie that Sanders Senior had rustled cattle. His accuser, the man who wanted his land. Money and influence went far in small towns, and despite his father living in the town for years, helping out whenever he could, they had hanged him, forcing Carlton to watch. His father had told him to forgive them. He couldn't believe his father's words. The man had been his hero. Carlton's mother had died in childbirth, and he and his father were so close. But the man had given up. Accepted his fate without petitioning for help. In Carlton's childlike mind, he couldn't understand how his father would just give up. Carlton had tried to reason with him but all his pa would say was "you can't fight money, son, it only delays the inevitable."

With his father dead, the Sheriff told Carlton to leave town, and if he had any shame, he'd change his name. Carlton remembered how the anger had burnt from within. He was powerless to do anything, and these God-fearing people had washed their hands of him.

Carlton didn't cry as he was marched out of town. He wouldn't give them the satisfaction but inside he was crushed.
